Dear Julie, I know that you can’t read this message, but I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I know that Santa Claus is not coming to visit you in your slum house and is not going to give you any present this time, as he didn’t give anything to you in past years. I know that if you had the opportunity to ask him for a gift, you would have asked that what happened to you could never have happened. Please be a strong girl and I promise that I will come to visit you soon!
Early in April 2012 6-year-old Julie was kidnapped and assaulted by four men in Nawae block, Lae, Papua New Guinea. The men raped the young girl for eight hours and then left her in the street. Julie spent more than three weeks in the hospital, and is now receiving psychological treatment. Because of the injuries inflicted on her, Julie can barely walk and can never have children. Her tormentors were arrested by the police and are awaiting trial in custody. Julie still lives with her parents in a dangerous settlement where she could be exposed to the violence again at any time.
