Happy International Women’s Day! I wish to all women to be happy and never experience any sort of violence from us men.
A photo from the “Crying Meri Diaries”, a new visual diary of my work in Papua New Guinea:
Balloons symbolizing the victims of violence. The balloons were prepared for an international protest against gender violence in Port Moresby. Jack Padik Park, in the city’s 5 Mile area, was crowded with people. Human rights activists, church leaders and politicians made speeches from the stage. Again and again they said that violence was not acceptable. Best of all the speakers was a woman who came to the stage to share her experience, “I said to my husband, I don’t want to have children with you,” she said, “When I was a little girl, I was raped by raskols. After the wedding you started beating and raping me. I don’t want to have a daughter to be born and brought up in the society with such traditions. There is no future for women here.”
